Doitter has just been created, a digital platform for new groups established in Spain and without a record contract. In view of this interesting project, we got in touch with Ángel Ortiz, its manager.
Interview by Xènia Senserrich
First of all, Angel, thank you very much for accepting this interview. Before delving into this new project, tell us, how did you get into the world of the music industry?
Hello! I started working as a journalist for various media outlets that allowed me to learn more about how this industry worked, soon after I saw that most of the labels or artists that I liked had emerged from private initiatives, not from executives or large companies, with which I decided to start my own record company.
Before forming Doitter, you were responsible for the PuPilo Records label. Why did you decide to dissolve it and form Doitter?
Well, more than closed PuPilo we will keep it on standby until who knows when… It is a label with a 5-year history, 13 published references and several large groups discovered that still maintain their careers.
Seeing that the business was transforming, that the numbers were not quite square and that I needed a new challenge, I transformed the original idea of a label open to new bands to the current Doitter platform.
You offer yourself something like a record company, with all the necessary distribution services, video clips, marketing,… Does the company itself do everything or are you just the ones who offer the information and act as intermediaries with external companies?
Some services are managed directly by us, such as manufacturing, digitization, legal editing, consulting and promotion. Then there are other services for which we rely on friendly companies with which we have interesting agreements, case studies and audiovisual production companies.
Apart from these services, is there the representation of the group or manager?
For now we do not contemplate it, it implies another type of work that we cannot manage from the online platform itself.
Do you accept all musical styles, including all the most extreme Metal?
We are quite receptive to listening to any material and for most of the services we offer of course we are open. Perhaps in store distribution is where it would cost the most, since they are quite reluctant, especially if the group is not well known ... but aren't there other alternative sales channels? From here I encourage any metal band to take a look at our website.
I suppose you will have to pay for your services. Are the profits exclusive to the company or are they mostly for the group?
100% of what the group generates is for the group itself! We do not charge any commission. Each service has a cost and is the only thing that Doitter receives, regardless of what the group sells or generates.
There have been many projects to support underground groups, such as the Emergenza Fest. Personally, the idea seems brilliant to me but not the way to manage it; for example, the fact of having to charge all your friends 12 euros so that the group with the most friends is the winner. Besides, the winner is promised European tours with established groups, and I know for a fact from one of the winners of two years ago that no one has contacted them. I understand that in all this the romantic vision does not exist and the business is always sought, but for this there are many ways. And after this explanation, my question is: to what extent is Doitter an aid to emerging groups and not a business?
We really offer services that they themselves could manage, in the case of manufacturing, digitization or communication, but due to ignorance, lack of time or experience, they do not perform. We work directly with the bands, listening to them and knowing their needs. Doitter is something like an online label, where the group decides what services it wants, and how and when to carry them out.
It does not concern much what Doitter is but perhaps, after so many years in the sector, you can answer a couple of questions:
Why is culture so expensive in Spain, compared to the rest of Europe?
I believe that there is still a lot of classism in our country and access to culture has historically been limited to a wealthy class. Now they sell us access to culture in a packaged way and paying for it.
How come there is so much complaint in the industry that people don't go to events but their prices have not stopped rising for years?
Obviously a spectator cannot afford to attend all the concerts in a city, the ones that have risen in price are the macro events that have to cover their expenses. Perhaps it would be necessary to promote more consumption in small rooms and not the assistance to those giants that in the end are by-products of some beverage brand or mobile phone ...
It seems that lately there is a boom in creativity and artists. Do you think it is a golden moment for this art?
What there is is more media coverage, new platforms for public exposure and more access to new technologies that facilitate creation, that naturally leads to the rise of new artists.
Also, I don't dare to venture if, because of the crisis or out of sheer devotion, many established groups already dissolved get together to do a memorial tour and, even, to publish a new album. Is it of the opinion to continue giving truce to the "dinosaurs" or is it about time that they accept it and give way to new generations?
It is clear that they do it for money 😉 but also thanks to that many new generations can enjoy live mythical groups, or older spectators relive experiences and emotions. I do not see it bad at all when the group has a continuous trajectory but it squeaks when a group returns after 20 years of drought.
On this website in particular we talk about everything related to Metal but it can be applied to all musical styles. Each style has had its golden age and key groups that, even today, are still considered the kings of the style such as The Beatles, Mozart, Wagner, BB King, Aretha Franklin, ... but with the groups that have emerged in this last decade They seem to have their months of glory but they do not last on the throne. Do you think it is due to the treatment that the industry makes of artists or, on the contrary, are they the ones who, since everything is already invented, do not surprise and therefore their glory only lasts for a few days?
There is a constant tidal wave of news and that makes it more difficult to distinguish the wheat from the chaff, but ultimately, after 20 years we will have our new idols and great icons of pop, rock, electronic and metal ... just like in the evolution, the one who best knows how to adapt to the new environment will survive.
And finally, if Doitter works well, would you turn the company into a record company?
No! Justo was born as an alternative to a record company! If it works really well, it will be a company specialized in services and we will be able to give more and better support to all new bands!
Thank you very much for your time, Angel, and if you want to add something else, the last words are yours… Good luck with the project!
Many thanks to the entire Camden Club Crew. Health and rock and roll!
