All about Steampunk aesthetics, origins and influences
By Dorian
Steampunk is a movement that is coming to Spain and which is being talked about more and more.
Steampunk has a root similar to cyberpunk, the two have rebellion and science fiction in common, cyberpunk would rather be a very technological future with chips and so on, but Steampunk goes another way, it focuses on a parallel future where steam engines, coal and gears have a very important role.
The Steampuk mixes what would be a very Victorian and baroque style of dressing, very much from 19th century London, taken from stories by Chals Dickens, this mixed with mechanical elements, pistols, welding glasses and all kinds of gears to make accessories.
This aesthetic emerged in the 80's and is not only linked to the aesthetic part of clothing, it even modifies computers, various musical instruments, mobiles, as if they had evolved in a different way and instead of electricity and circuits, they still used the steam energy.
The authors who inspire Steampunk would be Jules Verne and HG Wells, advanced for their time, creating all kinds of inventions, which in their time were difficult to imagine
In the world of cinema and animation, we can see Steampunk works such as: Wild Wild West, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Howl's Moving Castle, Steamboy or series like Last Exile.
And the most current where this trend has influenced is in the latest Disney game, "Epic Mikey" for Wii.
Here you have a video of Steampunk music, where you can see how they have modified all the elements and instruments:
